Albino Forquilha

Born at Amatongas administrative post, Gondola District of Manica Province, on the 12th December 1968, where he did first formal education and later on (1980) at Jecua Secondary school located at the boarder Mozambique-Zimbabwe. After being a child soldier, Forquilha, whose father died in July of 1970, was sent to study in the former Democratic Republic of Germany, where he remained from 1982-1988, completing general secondary school and professional training in mechanic engineering at Walter Kessner Institute, District of Stassfurt. Currently, Albino is studying sociology at Atlantic International University – USA. His grandfather was a traditional leader, called Mambo who led a huge administrative area, originally called the Chimoio tribe- meaning people who do not eat the hearts of any animal, today’s Manica Province Capital city name, returned after independence.

Albino Forquilha is the third child of his parents, and the first boy of the family. He has got three brothers, being two girls and two boys including him. His father (Forquilha Macamo) died in 1970 when he was a little boy and was created by his mother, name Julieta Catia Meque, active member of Women Organization of Mozambique (OMM) and active fighter of the colonial system in Mozambique, in 60’s.

Albino Forquilha, was a child soldier and after that a soldier in the regular army of Mozambique. He was the national coordinator of child soldier program of Mozambique at Rebuild Hope Association, whose fundamental objectives, among others, were to advocate for communities and African governments to ban the inclusion of children in armed conflicts. Action that culminated with the Declaration of Maputo on this matter, held 27-29 August 1999, where all African Countries participated, including UN representatives.

Forquilha used to be the national coordinator of the Civil Society Disarmament Program at Community Intelligence Force (FIC) and later on at the Transforming Arms into Ploughshare Program in partnership with the Christian Council of Mozambique, period that more than 860.000 war artifacts were collected and destroyed in partnership with Rachel Operation (Joint operation force between Mozambique and the Government of South Africa). Forquilha promoted during these periods three fundamental aspects, namely Reconciliation, Peace and Security. He encouraged many artists to transform fragmented weapons into useful sculptures (chairs, tables, peace birds, three of lives, among other) that FOMICRES used to promote peace at locally and internationally. In this context numerous exhibitions were made in countries of the four continents of the world. He is one of the first civil society members to hold a speech at UN general assembly on the importance of civil society participation in DDR programs during the Prepcom session (February 2001) especially in post conflict countries.

Albino Forquilha, founder of FOMICRES, is since 2008 working hard within the FOMICRES and in deep collaboration and coordination with affected communities in order to discover appropriate Community Safety and crime Prevention Model considering increasing community insecurity in Mozambique in order to incentive community participation, which first draft (Triangle Model) is in discussion since last year and will be experienced in some communities.

Albino Forquilha is the Executive Director of FOMICRES and the first elected Coordinator of the Southern Africa NGO Network on Human Security (HumaNet) for which he is one of main regional promoters for its foundation. Albino Forquilha was trained in conflict mediation, transformation and resolution by Inwent (Germany) and he is recognized international peace builder.
